This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It particularly lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in individuals over 55 years old or those with risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, and low HDL cholesterol levels, and it also reduces the risk of vascular surgeries and chronic stable angina. In patients with type 2 diabetes who have risk factors like retinopathy, albuminuria, smoking, or hypertension, it is effective in reducing the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke. For adult patients previously diagnosed with coronary heart disease, it reduces the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction and both fatal and non-fatal strokes, and also helps reduce the risk of vascular surgeries, congestive heart failure hospitalizations, and angina. Additionally, it is used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia, contributing to lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, while raising HDL cholesterol levels. It is also used as an adjunctive treatment in patients with dyslipidemia or elevated serum triglycerides who do not respond well to dietary therapy and can be used alone or in combination with other therapies for familial hypercholesterolemia to improve cholesterol levels. This medication is effectively used for the treatment of both cardiovascular diseases and hyperlipidemia.
