Reduction of risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps to reduce the risks of cardiovascular diseases. It decreases the risks of various cardiovascular issues such as myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular revascularization, and chronic stable angina. It is particularly effective for patients with risk factors such as hypertension, smoking, and diabetes, and can also lower the risk of hospitalization due to congestive heart failure. Additionally, this drug is used to treat hyperlipidemia by lowering total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It is also used as an adjunct to diet in patients with primary dyslipidemia and familial hypercholesterolemia. Therefore, this medication is used for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and the improvement of hyperlipidemia.
The recommended initial dosage for the treatment of hyperlipidemia is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily, and if greater reduction in LDL cholesterol is required, it may be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The total dosage range is 10 to 80 mg once daily. The initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on treatment goals and the patient's response, and lipid levels should be analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks after starting treatment.
