Treatment of hypertension and kidney disease (in patients with type 2 diabetes)
This medication is used to treat hypertension. It is particularly effective for patients with kidney disease concurrent with type 2 diabetes among those with hypertension. It helps to control blood pressure, protect heart and kidney functions, and prevent complications.
This medication can be taken with or without food, but it is recommended to take it at the same time every day. For adults with hypertension, dosages of losartan potassium are initially prescribed at 50 mg orally once daily. If necessary, it can be given in two doses per day, or increased to a maximum of 100 mg once daily. In treating kidney disease in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes, the usual dosage is 50 mg once daily, adjusted per blood pressure levels.
Dosing varies for children and adolescents aged 6 years and older, based on weight. For those weighing between 20 kg and less than 50 kg, the recommended dosage is 25 mg once daily, with a maximum of 50 mg once daily.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus, especially if taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy; therefore, it should not be administered to women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. It is also safe to avoid prescribing this medication to patients with severely impaired liver function, congenital lactose intolerance, or certain kidney diseases. Caution is needed when administering this medication to elderly patients, patients with weak kidney function, and those at risk of a sudden drop in blood pressure. Regular monitoring of blood pressure and kidney function is essential. This medication may cause side effects such as muscle cramps, dizziness, cough, and indigestion; in rare cases, it may lead to angioedema or severe liver function abnormalities. If any unusual symptoms occur, consult a physician immediately. Taking this medication with other antihypertensives, potassium-sparing diuretics, or potassium supplements can elevate potassium levels in the blood to dangerous levels; therefore, it is crucial to consult a physician before taking these medications together. It is advisable to avoid grapefruit juice while taking this medication, and it is important to inform healthcare providers about all medications being taken due to potential interactions. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant must consult with healthcare providers before taking this medication, and if pregnancy is confirmed, they should stop taking it immediately. This medication is not recommended for breastfeeding women; if breastfeeding, it is advised to avoid use or discontinue breastfeeding. This medication is not to be used in children, especially those under 6 years old or in those with severe renal impairment. During treatment, blood pressure can drop too low; if dizziness or loss of consciousness occurs, inform healthcare providers immediately. In case of overdose, hypotension and bradycardia may occur, requiring immediate medical attention, and caution is needed as this medication is not removed through dialysis. Store this medication in a safe place out of reach of children, and do not transfer it to other containers.
