This medication is used in cases of acute vitamin C deficiency or when oral intake is difficult. Its main benefits include preventing and treating disorders caused by vitamin C deficiency, such as scurvy. It is also suitable in situations where the demand for vitamin C is increased, such as during pregnancy, lactation, or heavy physical labor. It is effective for conditions related to vitamin C deficiency or metabolic disorders, including capillary bleeding, improvement of side effects caused by medication, formation of bone matrix during fracture healing, and promotion of bone union. Additionally, it may provide some benefit for skin conditions like melasma, freckles, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and photosensitive dermatitis. Overall, this medication is used to improve vitamin C-related deficiency symptoms and metabolic abnormalities.
Ascorbic acid: 50 to 1,000 mg once daily or in several divided doses administered subcutaneously, intramuscularly, or intravenously. Adjust as appropriate based on age and symptoms.
This medication contains the additive sodium bisulfite, which can cause allergic reactions in individuals sensitive to sulfites. Asthma patients, in particular, may be sensitive to this ingredient and are at risk for severe asthma attacks, necessitating careful use. This medication should not be used in specific patients. Individuals allergic to this medication or its components, patients with oxaluria or thalassemia, patients with gout or cystinuria, and those with G6PD deficiency should not take this medication. Especially for patients with G6PD deficiency, high doses can lead to hemolytic reactions where red blood cells are destroyed. Taking this medication may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, abdominal cramps, fatigue, flushing, headache, and insomnia. Taking more than 1 gram per day can acidify uric acid, increasing the risk of diarrhea or kidney stones, and taking more than 600 mg can induce diuretic effects. Excessive ascorbic acid intake can result in the precipitation of oxalates, urates, etc., leading to kidney stones. This medication is mainly taken orally, but in cases where gastrointestinal absorption is difficult or in acute situations, it can be administered via injection, and it is preferable to switch to oral administration when possible. This medication may interact with other drugs, so caution is required. Salicylates can hinder the absorption of this drug, and taking it with aspirin, nicotine, alcohol, certain appetite suppressants, iron supplements, anticonvulsants, oral contraceptives, or tetracycline antibiotics may affect its action. In addition, high doses may reduce the effectiveness of anticoagulants, and there may be interactions with certain psychiatric medications or steroids, so consultation with a doctor is necessary. When pregnant women take this medication, the safety for the fetus is not fully established, so it should be administered only when necessary and high doses should be avoided. Particularly, taking more than 1 gram during pregnancy is not recommended, as it may induce scurvy in newborns. This medication can affect various urine or stool test results, thus should be taken into account during testing. For example, results of glucose tests may be distorted, and false-negative results may appear in hematuria or occult blood tests. In the case of overdose, diarrhea or kidney stones may occur, and if symptoms appear, immediate cessation of intake and proper treatment should be initiated. When administered by injection, there may be temporary pain at the injection site, and care should be taken to avoid repeated injections near nerves or the same site. Rapid intravenous injection may cause dizziness or phlebitis, so it is advisable to administer it slowly. Lastly, this medication should be kept out of reach of children, stored in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Transferring the medication from its original container to another can lead to misuse or deterioration in quality, so it must be stored in the original container.
