Efficacy & effects

Improvement of type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control)

  • Blood sugar control issues in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It may be administered as a monotherapy and when there is no improvement in blood sugar with other oral hypoglycemic agents, it is administered in combination with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin. Additionally, it is essential for patients with type 2 diabetes to engage in nutritional counseling, weight loss, and exercise therapy, as these efforts are necessary not only for initial treatment but also for sustaining the effects of drug therapy. This medication is used to effectively improve blood sugar control.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and works together with insulin to control blood sugar. However, this medication may impose a burden on the heart in some patients, so it should not be administered to patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure. During treatment with this medication, patients should be monitored closely for symptoms of heart failure such as weight changes, shortness of breath, and swelling, with immediate consultation with a physician if symptoms occur. Additionally, this medication may cause fluid retention leading to edema, so patients with existing edema or at high risk of cardiovascular disease should be especially cautious. Patients with active bladder cancer or a history of bladder cancer should not take this medication either. It is safest not to administer this medication to patients with severe liver or kidney impairment. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid using this medication, and premenopausal women should use appropriate contraception as this medication may stimulate ovulation and increase the risk of pregnancy. This medication can increase the risk of hypoglycemia when used in combination with other diabetes medications, so patients should be well aware of hypoglycemia symptoms and dosage adjustments of other medications may be necessary. Regular monitoring of blood glucose and liver function tests should be performed during treatment, and any sudden weight gain, edema, urinary problems, or hematuria should be reported to a physician immediately. Elderly patients or those with weak kidney or liver function should be treated with greater caution, and this medication should be taken once a day regardless of meals, being careful not to double dose the next day if a dose is missed. In case of overdose, appropriate treatment should be administered based on symptoms and the medication should be stored out of the reach of children.
