Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone density and increased fragility, which raises the risk of fractures. Therefore, this medication helps strengthen bones and prevent fractures. It is used for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men.

How to take

Adult dose

As sodium alendronate, take 70 mg once a week in the morning with a sufficient amount of water at least 30 minutes before food, beverages, or other medications. After taking, do not lie down for at least 30 minutes and until the first intake of food. This medication should be taken immediately upon waking in the morning, and should not be taken before bed or before waking. If a scheduled dose is missed, take 70 mg the next morning.

Precautions

This medication may irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, so patients with Barrett's esophagus, dysphagia, esophageal diseases, gastritis, duodenitis, ulcers, etc., need to be cautious when taking it. After taking it, side effects related to the esophagus such as esophagitis, esophageal ulcers, and esophageal erosion may occur, which in severe cases can progress to esophageal obstruction or perforation, so if symptoms occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. When taking this medication, it should be taken with plenty of water, and the patient should not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it to reduce the risk of esophageal irritation. Patients with delayed esophageal motility, those who cannot sit or stand upright for 30 minutes or longer, patients allergic to this medication or its components, patients with hypocalcemia, severe renal failure, pregnant or nursing women, and those with certain genetic disorders should not take this medication. Long-term use of this medication can cause musculoskeletal pain or rarely serious side effects like jaw osteonecrosis, so if abnormal symptoms occur, consult medical personnel. Ensuring adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D while maintaining weight-bearing exercises and a healthy lifestyle is beneficial. There may be interactions with other medications, so when taking calcium supplements, antacids, aspirin, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, it should be taken at intervals. It is safe for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and for nursing women, to avoid taking this medication. The safety for children and adolescents under 18 years has not been established, so it should not be used in this population. Elderly patients can take the medication, but some may be more sensitive to it, so caution is necessary. Abdominal pain, nausea, dyspepsia, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, acid reflux, esophageal ulcers, vomiting, dysphagia, abdominal bloating, gastritis, musculoskeletal pain, muscle cramps, headache, dizziness, taste disturbances, rash, itching, hair loss, uveitis, scleritis, episcleritis, and external auditory canal cholesteatoma.
