Efficacy & effects
Assisting effect for stomach and duodenum imaging
View approved original textHide original text
The contrast agent used during imaging of the stomach and duodenum helps to clearly show the inside of the digestive tract, aiding in accurate diagnosis. This contrast agent is necessary for detailed observation of the structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract and is useful in confirming abnormal findings or lesions. Patients will take the contrast agent according to the doctor's instructions before the imaging, and they will be guided to minimize discomfort during the imaging process. This type of contrast agent is an important tool in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases.
How to take
Adult dose
Administer the contrast agent orally just before or immediately after the start of imaging, typically 1.2 to 4 g with a small amount of water or contrast agent. Adjust as appropriate based on the doctor's judgment.
Precautions
This medication is not recommended for patients with gastrointestinal issues. For example, it may cause perforation to worsen or significant abdominal pain for patients who have a suspected or known perforation in the gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, it should not be administered to patients with acute bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, as the bleeding site may enlarge. This drug is also not suitable for patients on a sodium-restricted diet. It should be used cautiously in patients with suspected or confirmed fistulas in the gastrointestinal tract, those with narrowed or obstructed gastrointestinal tracts, those at risk for perforation, and those who are extremely debilitated, as symptoms may worsen in these cases. Taking this medication may lead to abdominal distension or belching due to the carbon dioxide generated within the gastrointestinal tract. There is a temporary increase in pressure inside the gastrointestinal tract, which may worsen symptoms in patients with gastrointestinal inflammation or bleeding. Additionally, blood pressure may temporarily drop, requiring caution during administration. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should only use this medication when the diagnostic benefit outweighs the risk, as an X-ray may be necessary following administration. There is limited experience and established safety in children, so this medication should only be used when the diagnostic benefit outweighs the risk. Elderly patients, who are more likely to have decreased gastrointestinal motility, should use this drug with caution, potentially reducing the dosage. This medication generates approximately 130 milliliters of carbon dioxide per gram, so the dosage and resulting gas volume should be carefully adjusted. Finally, this medication is hygroscopic, so it must be stored in a tightly closed container to prevent moisture exposure.
