Treatment of hypertension and kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes
This medication is used for the treatment of hypertension. It is particularly effective in preventing and treating kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes. It helps stabilize blood pressure and protect kidney function, contributing to overall health improvement. Therefore, this medication is used to alleviate kidney complications associated with hypertension.
This medication can be taken regardless of meals, but it is recommended to take it at the same time every day. For adults with hypertension, a starting and maintenance dose of 50 mg orally once daily of Losartan Potassium is recommended. The maximum blood pressure-lowering effect appears after 3 to 6 weeks of treatment. If the therapeutic effect is insufficient, the same dose can be split into two doses daily or increased as necessary up to 100 mg once daily.
For children and adolescents over 6 years old weighing 20 kg or more but less than 50 kg, a daily dose of 25 mg is recommended, which can be increased to a maximum of 50 mg once daily. For those weighing 50 kg or more, the standard dosage is 50 mg once daily, which can be increased to a maximum of 100 mg once daily based on the patient's blood pressure response.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus when taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters. Therefore, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take it. If a pregnant woman takes this medication, fetal lung development impairment, skeletal malformations, and kidney dysfunction may occur, necessitating an immediate cessation of use upon confirmation of pregnancy. It should not be administered to patients with certain conditions, such as those allergic to this medication or its components, severe liver impairment, or hereditary angioedema. Caution should also be exercised in patients with severely reduced kidney function or primary aldosteronism. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, and individuals with mild to moderate liver impairment should use this medication more cautiously, as excessive blood pressure reduction may lead to cardiac or cerebral issues. Generally, this medication is well tolerated, but side effects such as dizziness, muscle cramps, back pain, and upper respiratory infections may occur. Rarely, serious side effects such as angioedema, liver function impairment, myalgia, hyperkalemia, hypotension, and renal failure can occur, and medical consultation should be sought immediately if any unusual symptoms arise. This medication may interact with other drugs, especially potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and lithium, requiring caution when taken together. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and serum potassium levels is necessary during use. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid taking this medication, and if unavoidable, breastfeeding should be discontinued. This medication should not be used in children, especially those under 6 years old or with severely reduced kidney function. In cases of overdose, hypotension and bradycardia may occur, necessitating immediate medical attention. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery, as dizziness or drowsiness may occur, and it should be stored out of reach of children.
