This medication is used for the treatment of osteoporosis that can occur in both postmenopausal women and men. Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by decreased bone density, which increases the risk of fractures. This medication helps strengthen bones and prevent fractures. Therefore, it is effective not only for the management of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women but also in men.

How to take

Adult dose

As alendronate, take 70 mg once a week in the morning with a sufficient amount of water at least 30 minutes before consuming food, drinks, or other medications. Take it as soon as you wake up in the morning and swallow with enough water (170 to 230 mL). After taking, you should not lie down for at least 30 minutes and not lie down until after the first food intake. If you forget a dose, take 70 mg the next morning.

Precautions

This medication can irritate the gastric and esophageal mucosa, so caution should be exercised in patients with upper gastrointestinal diseases such as gastritis, esophagitis, esophageal ulcers, and esophageal erosion. After taking this medication, symptoms such as esophagitis, esophageal ulcers, and esophageal erosion may occur, and in rare cases, it can worsen to esophageal obstruction or perforation. If severe symptoms occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor. This medication should be taken with a sufficient amount of water, and after ingestion, you should not lie down for at least 30 minutes but should sit or stand to reduce the risk of esophageal irritation. Patients with esophageal strictures or achalasia, those who cannot sit or stand upright for more than 30 minutes, patients allergic to this medication or its ingredients, those with hypocalcemia, severe renal failure, pregnant or nursing women, and patients with certain genetic metabolic disorders should not be administered this medication. During treatment with this medication, blood serum calcium levels should be monitored periodically, and supplements should be taken if calcium or vitamin D levels are low, along with maintaining weight-bearing exercises and a healthy lifestyle. While taking this medication, bone, muscle, and joint pain may occur, and in rare cases, severe pain may arise. Therefore, consult a doctor if symptoms are severe. A rare side effect of osteonecrosis of the jaw has been reported, and if dental treatment or tooth extraction is needed, a treatment plan should be discussed with a doctor, and oral hygiene should be maintained. Long-term use may increase the risk of fractures in specific areas, so if persistent bone pain occurs, you should see an orthopedic specialist. There may be interactions with calcium supplements, antacids, or other oral medications, so other medications should be taken at least 30 minutes apart after taking this medication. Pregnant or nursing women should not use this medication, and safety and efficacy in children and adolescents under 18 have not been established. Elderly individuals can use this medication, but caution is needed as some elderly patients may respond more sensitively. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as hypocalcemia and gastrointestinal disturbances may occur, and you should not induce vomiting; rather, seek medical attention immediately. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children and should not be transferred to another container.
