Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with multiple risk factors such as advanced age, smoking, hypertension, and family history, as well as in patients with type 2 diabetes, and also reduces the risks of vascular interventions and angina. Additionally, it is used as an adjunct to diet for patients with hyperlipidemia to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels and raise good cholesterol (HDL). Particularly, it is utilized in pediatric patients with familial hypercholesterolemia to effectively reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. This medication is used to improve cardiovascular health and control blood lipid levels to prevent heart diseases.
The recommended starting dosage for the treatment of hyperlipidemia is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily, and for patients requiring a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol levels, it may be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The dosage can range from 10 to 80 mg once daily. The starting and maintenance dosages should be individualized based on treatment goals and patient characteristics, and lipid levels should be analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks to adjust dosages.
The recommended starting dosage for pediatric patients (10 to 17 years of age) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg daily, and the maximum recommended dosage is 20 mg daily. The dosage should be adjusted appropriately according to treatment goals.
