This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men. Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones, making them susceptible to fractures; this medication can strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures. Therefore, it is effective in improving bone density and preventing fractures.

How to take

Adult dose

Administer 35 mg orally once a week as risedronate sodium. Food can interfere with absorption, so take it at least 30 minutes before breakfast or at least 2 hours before or after ingesting food or beverages. Take it upright with a sufficient amount of pure water (170 to 230 mL), and do not chew or suck on it. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it.

Precautions

This medication may irritate the mucous membranes of the esophagus and stomach, so patients with problems in the esophagus or stomach should exercise caution when taking it. If symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or heartburn occur while taking the medication, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Take this medication while sitting or standing, with a sufficient amount of water, and do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it. This medication should not be taken by patients with certain esophageal diseases, hypocalcemia, severe renal impairment, or by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Taking medications or food that contain divalent cations such as calcium, magnesium, or iron together with this medication can interfere with absorption, so maintain a time gap before and after taking this medication. There may be rare but serious side effects with long-term use such as femoral fractures or osteonecrosis of the jaw; continuous observation of symptom changes is necessary. Avoid taking this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and consult a physician if necessary. Elderly patients can take this medication similarly to adults; however, caution may be needed based on individual conditions. Overdosage may lead to hypocalcemia, which requires appropriate treatment. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and it is advisable not to change the container.
