This medication is used in the treatment of symptoms of Alzheimer's type dementia.

How to take

Adult dose

As donepezil hydrochloride, administer 5 mg once daily before bedtime. Administer 5 mg for 4–6 weeks, and after evaluating clinical response, it may be increased to 10 mg. When increasing to 10 mg once daily, caution should be taken for gastrointestinal adverse reactions. Underweight female patients aged 85 and older should not exceed 5 mg daily and require careful monitoring.

Child dose

There is no experience using this medication in children.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by patients who are allergic to specific components or by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Patients with genetic issues such as galactose intolerance, lactose deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should also refrain from taking this medication. Patients with heart conditions should use this medication cautiously, as it may affect heart rhythm. Patients taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or those with a history of peptic ulcers should use this medication carefully due to the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding or worsening of ulcers. Additionally, various side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, insomnia, hallucinations, anxiety, muscle pain, etc., may occur, so it is important to monitor symptoms carefully during use. This medication is used for the treatment of dementia, and the therapeutic effect should be evaluated regularly, with consideration for discontinuation if necessary. Patients with heart conditions or electrolyte abnormalities may require heart monitoring. Be cautious while driving or operating machinery, as dizziness or fatigue may occur. This medication can interact with several drugs, so if you are taking other medications, it is essential to inform your doctor or pharmacist. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use this medication and should consult a specialist before use, even if necessary. Safety in children has not been confirmed, so it should not be used in pediatric patients.
