Treatment of hypertension and diabetic kidney disease
This medication is used to treat hypertension. It is particularly effective in treating hypertension in patients with type 2 diabetes and helps prevent or delay the occurrence of kidney disease. This treatment helps manage blood pressure steadily, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular complications. Therefore, it plays a crucial role in maintaining kidney health in patients with hypertension and diabetes.
This medication can be taken regardless of food, but it is recommended to take it at the same time each day. For adults with hypertension, the initial and maintenance dose is recommended as 50 mg orally once a day as Losartan Potassium. If the treatment effect is insufficient, it may be divided into twice daily dosing or increased to a maximum of 100 mg once a day. For adults with hypertension and chronic kidney disease associated with type 2 diabetes, the usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily, increasing as needed based on blood pressure control.
For children and adolescents aged 6 years and older, the dosage varies based on weight. (1) For patients weighing 20 kg to less than 50 kg, the recommended dose is 25 mg once a day, with a maximum of 50 mg once a day.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus, especially if taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, so women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take it. If a pregnant woman takes this medication, serious problems such as impaired lung development of the fetus, skeletal malformations, and reduced kidney function may arise, and it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Patients with a history of allergic reactions to this medication, severe liver dysfunction, a history of angioedema, and those with certain hereditary lactose-related disorders should not take it. Additionally, patients with severe kidney dysfunction, certain heart diseases, and hyperkalemia should use this medication cautiously and should follow the doctor's instructions. This medication lowers blood pressure, which can cause symptoms such as dizziness and hypotension, so elderly patients or those at risk of sudden drops in blood pressure should take caution when using it. During the period of taking this medication, potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium should be avoided, and serum potassium levels should be regularly monitored to ensure there are no abnormalities. Occasionally, side effects such as angioedema, liver dysfunction, kidney failure, muscle pain, and dry cough may occur, and if symptoms appear, immediate consultation with a doctor is required. This medication can interact with other antihypertensives, diuretics, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), so you must inform your doctor if you are taking any other medications. If blood pressure drops too low or symptoms such as loss of consciousness, severe dizziness appear, treatment should be discontinued immediately, and medical assistance should be sought. This medication is not recommended for children, especially those under 6 years of age or with severely impaired kidney function, as its safety and efficacy have not been confirmed. When taking this medication, store it out of the reach of children, and consult a doctor if you are planning to become pregnant or are currently pregnant.
