How it is given

Adult administration

As ascorbic acid, 50 to 1,000 mg should be injected subcutaneously, intramuscularly, or intravenously once a day or divided into several doses. Adjust doses appropriately based on age and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to this drug or any of its components. It is safe to avoid administering this medication to patients with certain conditions, including hyperoxaluria, thalassemia, gout, or cystinuria. Patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency should be cautious as high doses of this medication can cause hemolysis, leading to red blood cell destruction. Patients with renal oxalate stones should avoid taking more than 1 gram of this medication per day. Taking this medication may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, fatigue, facial flushing, headache, and insomnia. In particular, using a dose greater than 1 gram per day may acidify urine and increase the risk of diarrhea or kidney stones, so caution is needed. Doses greater than 600 milligrams may have a diuretic effect. Excessive doses of this medication can cause the precipitation of oxalate or other substances in the urinary tract, leading to stone formation, so proper dosages should be followed. When oral administration is possible, oral administration should be prioritized over injections, and injections should be used sparingly only when gastrointestinal absorption is difficult. This medication may interact with some drugs; caution is needed when used with aspirin, alcohol, iron supplements, or certain anticonvulsants. During pregnancy, the safety for the fetus is not fully established, so it is advisable not to take more than 1 gram of this medication and to use it only when necessary. This medication can affect the results of urine or blood tests, so inform the healthcare provider of any usage before undergoing tests. Excessive doses may lead to diarrhea or kidney stones and have a diuretic effect; if symptoms occur, discontinue use immediately and consult with a healthcare provider. When administered by injection, pain may occur at the injection site, and if the injection is given too quickly, dizziness or vascular pain may arise, so it should be administered slowly. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children, away from direct sunlight, and in a dry place. Medicines should be stored in their original containers, as transferring them to other containers may lead to quality degradation or misuse risks.
