How it is given

Adult administration

Typically, for adults, administer 500-1000mL by slow intravenous infusion. The infusion rate should be less than 0.5g of glucose per hour per kg of body weight. Dosage and infusion rate should be adjusted appropriately depending on age, weight, and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication contains glucose and potassium, which can induce thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency when administered intravenously. Be cautious of possible allergic reactions; discontinue use immediately and seek appropriate treatment if allergy symptoms occur. Due to its high potassium content, there is a risk of hyperkalemia, so patients with poor kidney function or heart disease should be particularly cautious, and potassium levels in the blood should be monitored frequently. For patients with decreased glucose tolerance, blood sugar may spike rapidly, so blood glucose levels should be closely monitored, and insulin therapy may be needed if necessary. Due to sodium and chloride content, hypernatremia, hyperchloremia, and metabolic acidosis may occur, so patients with related conditions must use this medication with caution, and electrolyte status should be checked via blood tests. Children, the elderly, and patients taking certain medications who are at high risk of hyponatremia should be carefully monitored for symptoms such as headaches, vomiting, and seizures. There is a risk of edema or pulmonary congestion due to fluid overload; thus, fluid status and electrolyte balance should be checked regularly. In cases of malnutrition, refeeding syndrome can occur, thus nutritional supply should be gradually increased while monitoring potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium levels. Patients with hyperkalemia, fluid overload, hypernatremia, hyperglycemia, etc., should avoid using this medication, and when used, it should be approached with extreme caution. This medication can interact with other drugs, especially those that induce hyperkalemia or blood glucose-regulating medications, so frequent blood tests should be performed under professional guidance. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, newborns, children, and the elderly require special caution when using this medication, and blood glucose and electrolyte status should be closely monitored. In case of overdose, use should be discontinued immediately, and appropriate treatment for hyperkalemia or other side effects should be undertaken. Maintain a consistent dosage and infusion rate during administration, and take care with the connection to prevent air embolism. Finally, this medication should be stored at room temperature, and strict adherence to the physician's instructions should be followed during use.
