Efficacy & effects

Improvement and treatment of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Blood sugar control disorders in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication helps improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes by assisting dietary and exercise therapy. It can be used alone, and if there is no improvement in blood sugar despite the use of other oral hypoglycemic agents, it can be combined with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin. Additionally, it is important to accompany this medication with nutritional counseling and, in some cases, weight loss and exercise therapy. Such comprehensive treatment effort is needed for both initial therapy and to maintain the ongoing effectiveness of the medication. Therefore, this medication effectively improves blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

It is started at a dose of 15 mg once daily as monotherapy, and if the effect is insufficient, the dose may be increased to 30 mg once daily. Precautions

This medication is used to treat type 2 diabetes and only shows effectiveness in lowering blood sugar with the assistance of insulin. This medication may put some patients at risk of worsening or newly developing congestive heart failure, so it should not be used in patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure. After starting treatment or increasing the dose, it is crucial to closely monitor for sudden weight gain or symptoms of heart failure, such as shortness of breath, and consult a doctor immediately if symptoms arise. Additionally, this medication can cause fluid retention, leading to edema, so patients with edema or a high risk of heart disease should use it cautiously. Patients with active bladder cancer or a history of bladder cancer should not use this medication, and they should inform their doctor immediately if they experience hematuria or urinary disorders during treatment. Patients with impaired liver function should also exercise caution and have regular liver function tests before and during treatment. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when this medication is used in combination with other diabetes medications, so dosage adjustments of the concomitant medications may be necessary. Premenopausal women should be aware that this medication may induce ovulation and increase the possibility of pregnancy; thus, appropriate contraceptive measures are recommended. Elderly patients or those with reduced kidney function should also be cautious, and regular monitoring of weight gain, edema, and symptoms of heart failure should be conducted during the use of this medication. In cases of overdose, no specific symptoms may be observed; however, if unusual symptoms occur, immediate medical attention is required. This medication is taken once daily, and in case a dose is missed, care should be taken not to double the next day's dose. Finally, keep it out of reach of children and store it in its original container to maintain quality.
