Reduction of risk for myocardial infarction and stroke, and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It decreases the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with risk factors for coronary artery disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes. It also lowers the risk of hospitalization due to angina pectoris, the need for vascular interventions, and congestive heart failure. In patients with hyperlipidemia, it is used to reduce levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-B protein, and triglycerides while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It is especially effective in pediatric patients with familial hypercholesterolemia. Overall, this medication is used to improve cardiovascular health and lower the risk of associated diseases.
Hyperlipidemia The recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily, which may be increased to 20 mg or 40 mg if necessary. The dosage range is 10 to 80 mg once daily. Initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on treatment goals and patient response, and lipid levels should be analyzed and adjusted after 2 to 4 weeks. For patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dose is 10 to 80 mg once daily.
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17), the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 20 mg once daily. Dosage should be adjusted at intervals of at least 4 weeks according to treatment goals.
This medication may affect muscles, so if symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness appear, you should consult a doctor immediately. In particular, if muscle enzyme levels rise significantly or if myopathy is suspected, the medication should be discontinued. This medication may strain the liver, so patients with liver dysfunction or liver disease should avoid its use and undergo regular liver function tests while on it. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as breastfeeding women, should not take this medication. Use in children, especially those under the age of 10, is not recommended. This medication may have an increased risk of side effects when taken with certain drugs, so if you are taking other medications, you must inform your doctor or pharmacist. Particular caution is needed when co-administering with certain antibiotics, antifungals, HIV treatments, and some cardiovascular medications. Patients with a history of alcoholism or liver disease should be particularly cautious when taking this medication, and elderly patients are also at an increased risk of myopathy, requiring caution. During the usage of this medication, it is important to avoid strenuous exercise or strain on the muscles, and if symptoms like muscle pain, fatigue, or fever appear, you should report to healthcare personnel immediately. Taking this medication with grapefruit juice may increase blood concentration, so it is advisable to limit grapefruit juice intake. Furthermore, this medication contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance should not take it. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so appropriate treatment should be administered based on symptoms, and liver function and muscle enzyme levels should be tested. Store this medication in a tightly sealed container out of reach of children, and keep it in its original container to prevent misuse or quality degradation.
