This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. In particular, it decreases the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with multiple risk factors for coronary heart disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, it lowers the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular procedures, hospitalizations for congestive heart failure, and angina in adults with heart disease. Additionally, it decreases total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in patients with hyperlipidemia while increasing HDL cholesterol. This medication is also effective in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia and in pediatric patients when they meet certain risk criteria. Therefore, it is used for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and the treatment of hyperlipidemia.
