Improvement of symptoms in Alzheimer's type dementia
This medication is used to improve the symptoms of Alzheimer's type dementia. It helps alleviate symptoms such as memory decline and cognitive dysfunction, aiding daily activities and improving quality of life.
As Donepezil Hydrochloride, administer 5 mg once daily before bedtime. If unusual dreams, nightmares, or sleep disturbances occur, consider morning administration. For 4 to 6 weeks, administer 5 mg, with an increase to 10 mg after evaluating clinical response. When increasing to 10 mg daily, monitor for gastrointestinal adverse reactions. Women over 85 years of age who are underweight should not exceed 5 mg daily.
There is no experience in pediatric usage.
This medication contains Donepezil Hydrochloride and is used for the treatment of Alzheimer's type dementia. First, individuals who are allergic to Donepezil Hydrochloride or piperidine derivatives, or to any other components of this medication, should never take it. Also, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as those who are breastfeeding, should not take this medication. Since this medication contains lactose, individuals with lactose intolerance or certain genetic lactose metabolic disorders should also avoid it. Patients with heart disease, especially those with sick sinus syndrome or heart conduction disorders, should use this medication with caution, as it may slow heart rate or induce arrhythmia. Individuals taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or with a history of peptic ulcers should be cautious of the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding or worsening of ulcers. Patients with a history of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease may experience worsening symptoms due to bronchoconstriction and increased mucus secretion, and should be careful. Patients with extrapyramidal disorders such as Parkinson's disease may also experience deterioration of symptoms when taking this medication. This medication may cause various side effects, and serious cases may include fainting, bradycardia, heart block, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver function abnormalities, seizures, etc. Muscle-related issues such as myalgia, weakness, and rhabdomyolysis should also be monitored, and serious adverse reactions such as acute pancreatitis and acute renal failure have been reported. Additionally, symptoms such as hallucinations, insomnia, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting may occur frequently. This medication should be used under the supervision of a physician experienced in diagnosing and treating Alzheimer's type dementia, and treatment effects must be regularly evaluated. Individuals with heart disease or electrolyte abnormalities may need an ECG, and caution should be taken for the risk of accidents due to dizziness or fatigue when driving or operating machinery. This medication can interact with various drugs, so it is essential to consult a physician, especially when taking medications that affect CYP3A4 or CYP2D6 enzymes, neuromuscular blockers, anticholinergic drugs, beta-blockers, NSAIDs, specific antiarrhythmics, and antibiotics. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should generally avoid this medication, and if necessary, breastfeeding should be suspended after consulting a specialist. Safety for pediatric use has not been established, therefore it should not be used in children. In case of overdose, serious symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, bradycardia, respiratory depression may occur, and immediate medical treatment is required, where atropine can be administered as an antidote. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children, and changing the container is important for maintaining quality.
