Summary

Main use
Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hyperlipidemia
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
For hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily, but in patients requiring a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol levels, it can be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This drug is administered at a dosage range of 10 mg to 80 mg once daily. The initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on the therapeutic goals and response, and lipid levels should be analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks after starting treatment or adjusting the dose. The treatment goal is to reduce LDL cholesterol levels, so it is recommended to use LDL cholesterol for assessing treatment response at the start of treatment and afterward. However, if LDL cholesterol levels cannot be utilized, total cholesterol levels should be used to monitor treatment response. In patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dosing range is 10 mg to 80 mg once daily, administered in conjunction with or when other lipid-lowering therapies (e.g., LDL apheresis) are not possible.
Child dose
The recommended initial dose for patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17) is 10 mg once daily, and the recommended maximum dose is 20 mg once daily. The dosage should be adjusted appropriately according to the therapeutic goal.

This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It particularly decreases the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, the need for vascular revascularization, angina, and hospitalization due to congestive heart failure, thus improving heart health. It is beneficial for adults with risk factors for coronary heart disease or patients with type 2 diabetes, and it helps regulate blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia. It is also used to lower blood lipid levels in pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Overall, this drug is used to improve cardiovascular health and reduce related risks.

How to take

Precautions

This medication can cause muscle problems, so if symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness occur, treatment should be stopped immediately and a doctor should be consulted. It should not be used in patients with certain liver diseases or severely impaired liver function. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication. Children under 10 years old should not take this medication, and safety and efficacy have not been sufficiently studied in children between 10 and 17 years old. Patients with a history of alcoholism or liver disease should be particularly cautious when using this medication. This medication may interact with other drugs, so be sure to inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are currently taking any medications. Particular caution is needed when used with certain antibiotics, antifungal drugs, HIV treatments, or some antihypertensive drugs, as dosage adjustments or careful monitoring may be required. It is essential to regularly check liver function and muscle status while taking this medication. If symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, malaise, muscle pain, muscle weakness, or fever occur, notify a healthcare provider immediately. Avoid grapefruit juice while taking this medication, as it may increase blood concentration. Elderly patients are at higher risk for muscle-related side effects and should be particularly cautious. There is no specific antidote for overdose; treatment should be symptomatic, and liver function and muscle enzyme testing should be performed to assess condition. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container.
