Treatment of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia; catheter-assisted treatment of associated acute urinary retention
This medication helps relieve functional symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. It also serves as an adjunct to catheterization in cases of acute urinary retention associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Therefore, it is effectively used in the treatment of symptoms related to prostatic enlargement.
The recommended dose is 10mg once daily, taken immediately after the evening meal. Do not chew; swallow the tablet whole at once. When administered as adjunctive therapy to catheterization for acute urinary retention related to benign prostatic hyperplasia, the recommended dose is 10mg once daily, taken after a meal starting on the first day of catheterization. Take it for 2-3 days while the catheter is in place and for 1 day after catheter removal, for a total of 3-4 days.
This medication contains alfuzosin and should not be used in certain patients. For instance, it should not be administered to individuals allergic to this medication or alfuzosin, those with orthostatic hypotension, patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function, individuals with bowel obstruction, patients already taking other alpha-blockers, and those on potent CYP3A4 inhibitors. Certain patients require particular caution when using this medication. Patients on antihypertensives may experience orthostatic hypotension within hours of using this medication, leading to symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, and sweating. If these symptoms occur, it is essential to lie down and rest, and particular caution should be exercised in elderly patients. Additionally, patients with coronary artery disease should not use this medication alone, and if angina symptoms worsen, usage should be stopped immediately. This medication can cause various side effects, with dizziness, headache, upper respiratory tract infections, dyspepsia, weakness, and fatigue being the most common. Rarely, serious side effects such as skin rashes or thrombocytopenia may occur; therefore, any unusual symptoms should be discussed with a healthcare professional immediately. Patients planning cataract surgery should inform their ophthalmologist of this medication's use. As an alpha-1 blocker, it may induce intraoperative floppy iris syndrome, potentially affecting surgical methods. This medication should be swallowed whole as directed; breaking, chewing, or powdering it may alter efficacy and increase the risk of side effects. Patients with a history of severe hypotension should take particular care when using this medication. Using this medication in combination with other antihypertensives or nitrate products may increase the risk of hypotension, so it should be discussed with a doctor. Notably, it should never be combined with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors like ketoconazole, itraconazole, or ritonavir. Safety in pregnant or lactating women has not been established, hence it should not be used in women. Additionally, efficacy in pediatric patients has not been demonstrated, so it should not be used in children. Dizziness or weakness may occur during treatment, necessitating caution when driving or operating machinery. In the event of overdose, immediate hospitalization is necessary for appropriate treatment, as this medication is difficult to remove through dialysis. Lastly, it is crucial to keep this medication out of reach of children and not transfer it to another container to maintain safety and quality.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
