This medication is used for the treatment of functional symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia and provides adjunctive therapy for catheterization in cases of related acute urinary retention. This medication is effective in alleviating prostatic enlargement and the resulting urinary issues.
The recommended dose is 10mg once daily, taken immediately after the evening meal. Do not chew; swallow the tablet whole at once. When administered as adjunctive therapy to catheterization for acute urinary retention related to benign prostatic hyperplasia, the recommended dose is 10mg once daily, taken after a meal starting on the first day of catheterization. Take it for 2-3 days while the catheter is in place and for 1 day after catheter removal, for a total of 3-4 days.
This medication contains alfuzosin and should not be used in certain patients. Patients who are allergic to alfuzosin or any component of this medication, those with orthostatic hypotension, patients with severely impaired liver function, patients with very poor kidney function, patients with intestinal obstruction, those already taking other alpha-blockers, and patients on strong CYP3A4 inhibitors should not take this medication. Additionally, this medication may cause orthostatic hypotension in some patients, particularly those undergoing hypertension treatment, during the first few hours of administration, so caution is necessary. Symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, and sweating may occur with orthostatic hypotension; if such symptoms manifest, the patient should lie down until they completely subside. Older patients may be more sensitive to these symptoms and require extra caution. This medication should not be prescribed alone to patients with coronary artery disease, and if angina worsens or recurs, the medication should be discontinued. Furthermore, caution should be exercised in patients with congenital or acquired QT interval prolongation or those taking medications that prolong the QT interval. Various side effects may occur with this medication, commonly reported ones include dizziness, headaches, upper respiratory infections, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, weakness, and fatigue. Rarely, symptoms like skin rashes, angioedema, and erectile dysfunction may also occur, and if any unusual symptoms are experienced, the patient should consult a healthcare provider. This medication may pose a risk of a rare ocular complication called intraoperative floppy iris syndrome during cataract surgery, hence patients scheduled for surgery should inform their ophthalmologist about taking this medication. The tablet should be swallowed whole; crushing, chewing, or powdering the tablet may impair absorption and increase the risk of side effects. Moreover, combining this medication with other alpha-blockers or strong CYP3A4 inhibitors may increase the risk of side effects such as blood pressure reduction, so co-administration should be avoided or approached with caution. The safety of this medication in pregnant or lactating women has not been confirmed, and it should not be used in children. During the initial period of administration, dizziness or weakness may occur, requiring caution when driving or operating machinery. In case of overdose, immediate medical attention should be sought, and the patient should maintain a lying position while receiving treatment for hypotension; this medication is not removed by dialysis. Finally, this medication should be kept out of children's reach and should not be transferred to other containers.
