Treatment of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia; adjunctive use with a catheter for associated acute urinary retention
This medication is used to treat functional symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. Additionally, it helps in the management of catheterization in patients with acute urinary retention associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Therefore, it is useful in alleviating symptoms of prostatic hyperplasia and improving urinary obstruction.
The recommended dose is 10mg once daily, taken immediately after the evening meal. Swallow it whole without chewing. When administered as adjunctive therapy to catheterization for acute urinary retention associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia, the recommended dose is 10mg once daily, taken after a meal starting on the first day of catheterization. Take it for 2-3 days while the catheter is in place and on the day after catheter removal, for a total of 3-4 days.
This medication contains alfuzosin and should not be used in certain patients. Individuals who are allergic to alfuzosin or any of the other components of this medication should not take it. Patients with orthostatic hypotension, severe liver dysfunction, and those with severely impaired kidney function should also avoid using this medication. Patients with symptoms of intestinal obstruction should not take this medication due to one of its components, castor oil. Patients who are currently taking other alpha-blockers or potent CYP3A4 inhibitors should not use this medication concurrently. This medication may cause orthostatic hypotension, especially in patients who are taking blood pressure-lowering medications, in the first few hours after administration. Orthostatic hypotension can cause symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, and sweating upon standing suddenly, so it is advisable to lie down and rest if such symptoms occur. Elderly patients should be particularly cautious of these symptoms, which are usually temporary and often do not require cessation of treatment. Patients with heart disease or those taking blood pressure medications need to be careful as there is a risk of a rapid drop in blood pressure when using this medication. Patients with coronary artery disease should not use this medication as monotherapy, and should discontinue immediately if symptoms of angina worsen. Patients with a prolonged QT interval related to heart rhythm disorders or those taking related medications should use this medication with caution. Common side effects may include dizziness, headache, upper respiratory tract infection, dyspepsia, constipation, and fatigue. Rarely, skin rash, angioedema, erectile dysfunction, and hypotension may occur, and very rarely, cardiovascular issues or liver damage have been reported. Patients taking this medication must inform their doctor about the usage of alpha-blockers prior to undergoing cataract surgery, as it may pose a risk of intraoperative miosis and affect the surgical approach. This medication should be swallowed whole and not crushed, chewed, or made into powder, as this can alter its effectiveness and increase the risk of side effects. Patients currently taking alpha-blockers or those with a history of severe hypotension should exercise greater caution when using this medication. This medication may affect sexual function, so if there is an occurrence of prolonged erection, the patient should consult their doctor immediately. The risk of hypotension may increase when taken with other blood pressure medications or nitrate compounds, so caution is advised when used together. Particularly, co-administration with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors may increase the blood concentration of this medication, raising the risk of side effects. Information on the safety of this medication during pregnancy or lactation is insufficient, and it is not used in pediatric patients as its efficacy has not been established. Dizziness or weakness may occur while taking this medication, so caution should be exercised while driving or operating machinery. In the event of overdose, immediate hospitalization and appropriate treatment are necessary, as this medication binds extensively to proteins within the body, making it difficult to remove through dialysis. Finally, this medication should be kept out of the reach of children, and it is recommended not to transfer it to other containers to ensure safety and quality.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
