Reduction of risks of myocardial infarction and stroke, and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It particularly decreases the risks of myocardial infarction, stroke, the need for vascular surgery, and angina. It also lowers total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels in patients with hyperlipidemia while increasing HDL-cholesterol levels, effectively improving blood lipids. It is also used in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in conjunction with diet to lower cholesterol levels. Therefore, this medication is used for reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases and treating hyperlipidemia.
The recommended initial dose of atorvastatin is 10 mg taken once daily. If more reduction in LDL-cholesterol is needed, it may be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The dosage can be individualized within the range of 10 to 80 mg once daily according to treatment goals and patient response, adjusting the dose at intervals of 2 to 4 weeks. For patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the initial dose is 10 mg taken once daily.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (10 to 17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 20 mg per day. The dosage should be adjusted for individual patients at intervals of 4 weeks or more.
This medication may cause muscle problems, so if there is severe muscle pain or weakness, or significantly elevated creatine kinase levels, discontinue taking it immediately. Those with a history of alcohol abuse or liver disease, patients with reduced kidney function, and the elderly should use this medication with caution, regularly checking for muscle-related symptoms. This medication can affect liver function, so liver function tests and symptom monitoring are necessary, and if symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or fatigue occur, medical personnel should be notified. Appropriate contraception should be practiced during the use of this medication, and it should not be used during pregnancy. This medication can interact with several other medications, so if you are taking other medications, you must inform your healthcare provider, especially when combined with specific antibiotics, antifungals, or HIV treatments.
