Treatment of hypertension and kidney disease (in patients with type 2 diabetes)
This medication is used to treat hypertension and is particularly helpful in preventing and treating kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes who also have high blood pressure. Therefore, it is effective for blood pressure control and kidney function protection.
This medication is recommended to be taken at the same time every day, regardless of meals. For treatment of hypertension, 50 mg of Losartan Potassium is recommended to be taken orally once daily. If the therapeutic effect is insufficient, it can be divided into two doses of 50 mg per day or increased to 100 mg once daily if necessary. For kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension, 50 mg is typically administered once daily, and up to 100 mg can be given depending on blood pressure.
For children and adolescents aged 6 years and older weighing at least 20 kg but less than 50 kg, the recommended dose is 25 mg once daily, with a maximum of 50 mg. For those weighing 50 kg or more, the recommended dose is 50 mg once daily.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. This medication should not be used in patients with certain conditions; for example, patients with severely impaired liver function, hereditary angioedema, and women of childbearing potential should not take this medication. Elderly patients, patients with reduced kidney function, and those with hyperkalemia should take particular care while using this medication, and regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels is necessary. This medication may rarely cause various side effects such as angioedema, hepatitis, myalgia, dry cough, etc., so if symptoms occur, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. Caution is required when combined with other medications due to possible interactions, especially when taken with potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, or certain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. This medication is not recommended for breastfeeding women; if it must be taken, breastfeeding should be discontinued. Children, especially those under 6 years old or those with significant kidney dysfunction, should ideally not take this medication. While taking this medication, care should be taken in activities that require attention, such as driving or working at heights, as dizziness may occur. In case of overdose, hypotension and cardiac arrhythmias may occur, necessitating immediate hospital visit for appropriate treatment. Patients taking this medication who are planning a pregnancy or are already pregnant must consult their healthcare provider, and potassium supplements or potassium-containing products should not be taken without consulting a physician. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container for safety.
Hives, severe swelling (edema), difficulty breathing, angioedema (swelling of the larynx or glottis that can lead to airway obstruction, swelling of face/lips/pharynx/tongue), cold sweat, paleness, severe allergic reaction, severe rash, blisters, peeling skin, pain in oral/eye mucosa, severe skin reaction, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, asthma attacks, respiratory distress accompanied by coughing and fever, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
