  • Type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to assist in the control of blood sugar levels in patients with Type 2 diabetes by complementing dietary and exercise regimens. It can be administered alone, or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents if blood sugar improvement is insufficient, using sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin. Furthermore, it is important for Type 2 diabetic patients to also engage in nutritional counseling, weight loss, and exercise therapy, as this greatly aids in enhancing and maintaining the effectiveness of the drug therapy. This medication is used to effectively improve blood sugar control.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes and helps the action of insulin. However, it can affect heart function in some patients, potentially causing or worsening congestive heart failure, so it should not be used in patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure. While taking this medication, patients should be closely monitored for symptoms of heart failure such as sudden weight gain, shortness of breath, or swelling, and should consult a doctor immediately if these symptoms occur. Additionally, this medication can cause fluid retention and swelling, so caution is advised in patients with existing edema. Active bladder cancer patients or those with a history of bladder cancer should not be administered this medication, and any signs of hematuria or urinary problems during treatment should be reported immediately to a doctor. Patients with poor liver function or severe kidney impairment should also avoid this medication, as well as those with diabetic ketoacidosis or Type 1 diabetes. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication, and premenopausal women should use appropriate contraception as this medication may stimulate ovulation, increasing the risk of pregnancy. Regular monitoring of blood sugar and liver function tests is required during treatment, and it may be necessary to adjust dosages to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia when combined with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents. This medication may also cause side effects such as weight gain, headache, upper respiratory infections, edema, and others, so consultation with a doctor is necessary if these symptoms occur. Elderly patients or those with decreased kidney function should use it carefully, and immediate medical assistance should be sought in case of overdose. Finally, this medication has not been established as safe and effective for children under 18 years of age, thus it is not recommended for this age group.
