View approved original text

This medication is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with Type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone as monotherapy or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin when sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin are ineffective. Additionally, when using this medication, dietary control and exercise therapy must be followed, and nutritional counseling and weight loss may be recommended as needed. These various efforts are crucial for enhancing and maintaining the effectiveness of drug therapy. Therefore, this medication is used as part of comprehensive diabetes management to improve blood sugar control.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of diabetes and is effective in lowering blood sugar levels only in the presence of insulin. It may affect heart function, and should not be used in patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure. Patients should be closely monitored for symptoms of heart failure such as rapid weight gain, shortness of breath, and edema during treatment, and should consult a doctor immediately if these symptoms occur. This medication can cause fluid retention, which may worsen edema or heart failure, so it should be used cautiously in patients with edema or a high risk of heart disease. This medication is contraindicated in patients with a history of bladder cancer or those with active bladder cancer. Patients with poor liver function or severe renal impairment should not use this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid this medication, and premenopausal women require appropriate contraception due to the increased risk of pregnancy that may occur from ovulation stimulation. Regular liver function tests and blood sugar checks are required while taking this medication, and immediate medical evaluation is necessary if any abnormal symptoms arise. Additionally, when used with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents, there is a risk of hypoglycemia, so caution is needed, and adjustment of the doses of concomitant medications may be necessary. In case of overdose, even if there are no special symptoms, inform a medical professional immediately and seek appropriate treatment. The safety and effectiveness of this medication have not been confirmed in children, and it should be used cautiously in the elderly. Store this medication out of the reach of children, and keep it in its original container.
