Improvement of type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control)
This medication is used in conjunction with dietary therapy and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used as monotherapy and may be combined with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin if there is no improvement in blood sugar with the use of other oral hypoglycemic agents. Additionally, nutrition counseling, weight loss, and regular exercise are important for patients with type 2 diabetes, and these efforts are essential to maintain the effectiveness of drug therapy. This medication is used to improve blood sugar control.
This medication is taken orally once daily, regardless of meals. As monotherapy, it is initiated at a dose of 15 mg once daily; if enough efficacy is not achieved, it may be increased to 30 mg once daily. In combination therapy, it is also administered at 15 mg once daily, and the maximum recommended dose should not exceed 30 mg once daily.
There is no experience using this medication in patients under 18 years old; therefore, administration is not recommended.
This medication is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and requires the presence of insulin to be effective. This medication may cause or worsen heart failure; therefore, it should not be used in patients with heart failure. After starting treatment or increasing the dose, careful observation for symptoms of heart failure, such as weight changes, shortness of breath, and edema, is necessary. If symptoms of heart failure occur, immediate medical attention should be sought, and if necessary, the administration of this medication can be reduced or discontinued. Furthermore, this medicine can cause fluid retention, which may induce or exacerbate heart failure, so it should be used cautiously in patients with edema or heart diseases. Patients with active bladder cancer or a history of bladder cancer, liver diseases, severe kidney diseases, or diabetic ketoacidosis should not use this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication, and premenopausal women may require appropriate contraception due to the possibility of ovulation stimulation while taking this medicine. Regular monitoring of blood sugar and liver function tests is required during treatment with this medication, and immediate consultation with a physician should be sought if abnormal symptoms occur. This medication has a risk of hypoglycemia when used in combination with other hypoglycemic agents, so caution regarding dosage adjustment is necessary. Additionally, this medication may cause weight gain and edema, thus careful monitoring of weight changes is essential. In clinical trials and post-marketing surveys, rare side effects such as liver failure, macular edema, and fractures have been reported, so if any related symptoms occur, immediate notification to healthcare providers is necessary. This medication has drug interactions; therefore, it is crucial to inform healthcare providers if other medications are being taken, especially when used with CYP2C8 inhibitors or inducers. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, and symptomatic supportive care is needed. Store this medication out of reach of children and keep it in the original container.
