In adult males, the recommended dose of 50mg or 100mg is administered once daily approximately 1 hour before anticipated sexual activity; in some cases, it may be administered 4 hours to 30 minutes before sexual activity. The dose may be increased or decreased up to a maximum of 100mg according to efficacy and tolerability. The maximum recommended frequency of administration is once daily.
This drug should not be used in patients with cardiovascular disease because it may increase the risk to the heart during sexual activity. Patients with a narrowed left ventricular outflow tract or severely impaired blood pressure control may be sensitive to the vasodilatory effects of this drug, and caution is needed. If an erection lasts longer than 4 hours, seek medical attention immediately, as untreated cases may lead to penile tissue damage and permanent erectile dysfunction. Taking this medication in conjunction with nitrate compounds or nitric oxide donors can pose a risk of excessively low blood pressure; consultation with a physician is essential. Patients with a known allergy to this drug or its components, those taking nitrate compounds, patients with highly unstable cardiovascular conditions, or those who have experienced a stroke or myocardial infarction within the past 6 months should not take this medication. Patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function, hereditary retinal diseases, and those under the age of 18 should also refrain from using this medication. This drug should be administered cautiously in patients with mildly impaired liver or kidney function, and dose adjustment may be necessary when taken with certain antihypertensive medications or drugs affecting liver metabolic enzymes. Caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery while taking this medication, and if sudden vision or hearing loss occurs, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention. Overdosage may primarily result in symptoms such as headache or facial flushing, and treatment should be based on symptoms. This drug is not intended for use by children or women, and safety in the elderly has not been sufficiently established, thus warranting caution. This medication is for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and is not to be used as an aphrodisiac or sexual enhancement drug.
