This medication is used to effectively reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Specifically, it decreases the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with risk factors for coronary heart disease and patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, stroke, the need for vascular surgery, hospitalizations due to congestive heart failure, and angina in patients with established heart disease. Furthermore, it is used to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and triglyceride levels in patients with hyperlipidemia, while increasing levels of HDL cholesterol, the 'good' cholesterol. It serves as an adjunct to diet management for various dyslipidemias, including familial hypercholesterolemia, and can assist in cholesterol level management in young pediatric patients under certain conditions. Therefore, this medication is used to improve cardiovascular health and treat dyslipidemia.
