Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This drug is effective in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It is especially effective for adults with multiple risk factors for coronary heart disease and patients with type 2 diabetes, decreasing the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, and reducing the risks associated with vascular interventions and angina. Additionally, it lowers the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, fatal and non-fatal stroke, and hospitalization due to congestive heart failure in adult patients with clinical evidence and reduces angina symptoms. Used as an adjunct to diet for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, it reduces blood cholesterol and triglycerides in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, and increases HDL cholesterol. Furthermore, it helps control cholesterol levels in pediatric patients with familial hypercholesterolemia, aiding in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. This drug is effectively used to decrease the risk of cardiovascular diseases and improve dyslipidemia.
The recommended initial dose for the treatment of hyperlipidemia is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily. For patients requiring a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol, it may be initiated at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily, Generally administered within a dosage range of 10–80 mg once daily. An analysis of lipid levels should be performed 2 to 4 weeks after initiation of administration for necessary dose adjustments. In cases of homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia,
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17 years), the recommended initial dose is 10 mg per day, and the maximum dose is 20 mg per day. The dose may be adjusted according to the treatment goals over a period of 4 weeks or more.
This drug may cause unusual symptoms in muscles, so if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs or if creatine kinase levels significantly increase, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. If there are issues with liver function or symptoms of hepatitis occur, discontinue use and inform healthcare professionals. This drug should not be used in patients with certain liver diseases, muscle diseases, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, women who are breastfeeding, or children under 10 years old. Patients with a history of alcohol dependence or liver disease, elderly patients, and those with impaired kidney function should exercise particular caution when taking this drug, and be closely monitored for muscle-related unusual symptoms. This drug may interact with several other medications, so particularly when taking antibiotics, antifungals, certain antivirals, cyclosporine, specific lipid-lowering agents, colchicine, grapefruit juice, etc., inform the doctor or pharmacist, as dose adjustments or discontinuation may be necessary. Regular liver function tests and muscle-related examinations should be performed while taking this medication, and it is crucial to inform healthcare professionals immediately if any unusual symptoms occur. Women of childbearing age must use appropriate contraceptive methods while taking this medication, and immediately discontinue use if pregnancy is confirmed. Caution should be exercised when administering this medication to children and the elderly, especially since elderly patients are at a higher risk for myopathy and should be monitored more closely. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so appropriate treatment should be provided based on symptoms, with management of liver function and blood tests. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children, and it is safest to store it in its original container.
