Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It is particularly effective in lowering the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, complications after vascular surgeries, and hospitalizations due to angina and congestive heart failure. It also reduces the risk of cardiovascular complications in patients with Type 2 diabetes or those with multiple risk factors. Additionally, it is used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia, reducing LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol levels while increasing HDL cholesterol, thereby improving blood lipid status. Due to these actions, it plays a vital role in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. In summary, this medicine is used for improving cardiovascular diseases and hyperlipidemia.
For hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily; however, for patients requiring greater LDL cholesterol reduction, the initial dosage can be increased to 20 mg or 40 mg once daily (if more than 45% LDL cholesterol reduction is required). This drug is administered in a dosage range of 10-80 mg once daily. Dosing initiation and/or titration should be adjusted based on the patient's characteristics after analyzing lipid levels within 2-4 weeks post-initiation or adjustment.
This medication may cause muscle-related symptoms; therefore, it is essential to discontinue use and consult a doctor immediately if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs. This drug may impact liver function, so it should not be used in patients with liver disease or elevated liver function test values. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as breastfeeding women, should not take this medication. It should not be administered to children under 10 or patients with specific genetic lactose intolerance. Patients who are alcoholic or have a history of liver disease, those with impaired kidney function, and the elderly should use this drug with caution and may require regular monitoring. This medication can interact with various other drugs, so it is crucial to inform your doctor or pharmacist of any other medications you are taking. Be particularly cautious when taken with specific antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, and immunosuppressants. During the intake of this medicine, liver function and muscle condition should be monitored regularly, and treatment should be discontinued immediately if abnormalities are found. Moreover, it should be avoided to consume grapefruit juice simultaneously, as it may increase blood concentration and the risk of side effects. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so you should seek medical attention immediately for symptomatic treatment. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and kept in its original container to prevent misuse or deterioration.
