Reduction of risk for myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, it lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adult patients with multiple risk factors or patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it decreases the risk of various complications such as myocardial infarction, stroke, the need for vascular surgery, hospitalization due to congestive heart failure, and angina in patients already diagnosed with coronary artery disease. In patients with hyperlipidemia, it effectively lowers total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels while raising HDL-cholesterol levels, even when dietary control is insufficient. It is also used to manage cholesterol levels in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years with hereditary heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. This medication is used to improve cardiovascular health and treat hyperlipidemia.
The recommended initial dose of atorvastatin is 10 mg once daily, and if a greater reduction in LDL-cholesterol levels is needed, treatment may start at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This medication is administered in a dosage range of 10 to 80 mg once daily. The initial dose and maintenance dose should be individualized based on treatment goals and patient characteristics, and lipid levels should be analyzed 2 to 4 weeks after starting treatment to adjust the dose.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (10 to 17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum recommended dose of 20 mg once daily. The dose may be appropriately adjusted depending on the treatment goals.
