View approved original text

This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone or in combination with diet and exercise and may be used in combination with sulfonylureas, metformin or insulin when there is no improvement in blood sugar with other oral hypoglycemics. For patients with type 2 diabetes, nutrition counseling, weight loss, and regular exercise are very important, and these efforts are necessary not only for initial treatment but also for maintaining the effectiveness of drug therapy. This medication effectively improves blood sugar control in patients.

Precautions

This medication is used to treat type 2 diabetes and is effective in lowering blood sugar only when insulin is present. This medication can put a strain on the heart, so it should not be used in patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure. If symptoms of heart failure such as sudden weight gain, shortness of breath, or swelling occur during treatment with this medication, immediate medical attention should be sought. Additionally, this medication can cause fluid retention, which may worsen heart failure, so patients with cardiovascular disease should use it with caution. This medication should not be administered to patients with bladder cancer or a history of bladder cancer, and any occurrence of urinary problems or hematuria should be reported to a physician immediately. Patients with impaired liver function or severe renal disease should not take this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not use this medication, and premenopausal women should use appropriate contraception as this medication may promote ovulation, increasing the likelihood of pregnancy. Regular blood sugar and liver function tests are necessary during treatment with this medication, and there is a risk of weight gain or swelling, as well as hypoglycemic symptoms, so caution is required. As there is a risk of hypoglycemia, dose adjustments may be necessary when used in combination with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents. Elderly patients or those with diminished kidney function should also use this medication cautiously, and side effects such as headache, upper respiratory infection, muscle pain, and edema may occur. In case of overdose, there may not be any specific symptoms, but appropriate treatment is necessary depending on the symptoms.
