Efficacy & effects

Improvement of type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control)

  • Blood sugar control issues in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone, but if blood sugar improvement is insufficient despite the use of other oral hypoglycemic agents, it should be co-administered with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin. Additionally, it is important for patients with type 2 diabetes to receive nutritional counseling and engage in weight loss and exercise, which not only aids in initial treatment but also helps maintain the effectiveness of drug therapy. Thus, this medication is effectively used for blood sugar control.

Precautions

This medication is used to treat type 2 diabetes and helps control blood sugar by acting with insulin. This drug may place additional strain on the heart in some patients, potentially causing or worsening heart failure (congestive heart failure), so after starting treatment or increasing the dose, symptoms of heart failure such as weight change, shortness of breath, and swelling should be closely monitored. This medication should not be used in patients with heart failure, and if symptoms of heart failure occur, medical advice should be sought immediately to adjust the treatment. As this drug can cause fluid retention, which increases the risk of heart failure, patients with cardiovascular diseases like heart disease, hypertension, or myocardial infarction should take special caution. Patients with a history of or currently having bladder cancer should not be administered this drug, and if hematuria or urinary disorders occur during treatment, they should inform the physician immediately. Patients with impaired liver function or severe renal impairment should also preferably refrain from using this drug. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not use this medication, and premenopausal women should use appropriate contraception as this drug can stimulate ovulation and raise the risk of pregnancy. During the use of this medication, regular monitoring of blood sugar and liver function tests should be conducted, and if symptoms such as weight gain, swelling, or shortness of breath occur, they should inform a physician immediately. Additionally, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase when this drug is used in conjunction with other diabetes medications or insulin, so when used together, patients should be well-informed about hypoglycemia symptoms and management methods. Elderly patients or those with impaired kidney or liver function should be monitored more closely during administration, and in case of overdose, immediate medical assistance should be sought for appropriate treatment. Finally, the safety and efficacy of this medication have not been confirmed in children, hence it is not used in that age group.
