Treatment of androgenetic alopecia
This medication is used for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in adult males, particularly in men aged 18 to 41 years. Androgenetic alopecia is a type of hair loss that primarily occurs due to genetic factors and hormonal changes; this drug helps to promote hair growth and inhibit the progression of hair loss. With consistent use, one can expect the hair in the thinning areas to thicken and new hair strands to grow. It also contributes to relieving psychological stress caused by hair loss. It improves hair health through safe and effective treatment.
Generally, finasteride is taken orally at a dose of 1 mg once daily, and it can be taken regardless of meals. There is no evidence that increasing the dosage enhances efficacy. Typically, treatment effects can be seen after taking it for more than 3 months, and it is recommended to continue taking it to maintain treatment effects. The treatment period and efficacy should be continuously evaluated. If use is discontinued, treatment effects will disappear within 12 months.
This medication should not be administered to children or women. In particular, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should not handle broken pieces of this medication, as its components may be absorbed through the skin and pose a risk to male fetuses. During use, symptoms of depression or mood changes may occur; therefore, mental state should be monitored closely, and if such symptoms arise, use should be discontinued immediately and consulted with a specialist. Patients with liver function issues must use this medication cautiously, and there have been reports of adverse effects including decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculation disorders; consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary if such symptoms occur. If any breast changes, pain, lumps, or nipple discharge occur during treatment, notify a doctor immediately, and while there may be a decrease in ejaculation volume, this typically does not significantly affect normal sexual function. There are no clinically significant interactions reported with other medications; however, it is advisable to inform healthcare providers about any other medications being used concurrently. Animal studies during pregnancy have reported genital abnormalities in male fetuses, so pregnant women should not use this medication and it is also not recommended for breastfeeding women. This medication has not been proven safe and effective in children and should not be used; there is no need for dosage adjustment in the elderly, but sufficient research on its effectiveness has not been conducted. While taking this medication, care should be taken in interpreting blood test results, and there is no specific treatment for overdose, but it is crucial to contact a healthcare facility immediately. Store this medication in a place out of reach of children and avoid transferring it to other containers. Long-term use has reported occurrences of breast cancer in some men, although the causal relationship is unclear, and there may be an increased risk of prostate cancer, thus regular check-ups are required.
