Summary

Main use
Reduction of risk for myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of hyperlipidemia
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
For the treatment of hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily. For patients requiring more LDL-cholesterol reduction, it may start at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The dosing range is 10 to 80 mg once daily. Lipid levels should be analyzed 2 to 4 weeks after starting treatment to adjust the dosage. The treatment goal is to reduce LDL-cholesterol, thus it is recommended to evaluate treatment response using LDL-cholesterol levels. If LDL-cholesterol levels are unavailable, total cholesterol levels may be used to monitor treatment response. In patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dosing of this medication is 10 to 80 mg once daily and is given in conjunction with other lipid-lowering therapies (e.g., LDL apheresis) or when such therapies are unavailable.
Child dose
For pediatric patients (10 to 17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, an initial recommended dose of 10 mg once daily is suggested, with a maximum dose of 20 mg once daily. The dosing should be adjusted based on treatment goals every 4 weeks.

This medication helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, angina, and vascular surgeries in adults with various risk factors for cardiovascular disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is also used to lower total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apo-B, and triglyceride levels in patients with hyperlipidemia while increasing HDL-cholesterol levels. Particularly, it is effective as an adjunct to dietary therapy in pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia for controlling cholesterol levels. It aids in managing the risks of various cardiovascular diseases and dyslipidemia, thus improving patients' cardiovascular health.
