Improvement in blood sugar control for type 2 diabetes
This medication is used as a treatment to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Patients should take this medication alongside dietary and exercise therapy to aid in blood sugar management. It can be used alone, but if blood sugar control is inadequate, it may be combined with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents. Especially when sufficient effect is not achieved with sulfonylureas or metformin, combining this medication can enhance efficacy. This medication helps improve blood sugar control and assists in diabetes management.
This medication is administered orally once a day. It should be taken before breakfast or right before the first meal, swallowed whole without chewing, with at least half a cup of water. For monotherapy, patients who have never taken the medication before should start with 1 mg of Glimepiride once daily and increase the dose by 1 mg at 1-2 week intervals. In general, additional effects are minimal when dosages exceed 4 mg; however, if necessary, it can be increased to 6 mg.
This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those in a state of coma. Additionally, it should not be administered to patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or sulfonylureas, or those with severe liver or kidney dysfunction. It is also safer for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as those who are breastfeeding, not to take this medication. Insulin therapy is recommended for patients with severe infections, pre- and post-surgery, or severe trauma, so this medication should not be used in those cases. Patients with gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea or vomiting may be at risk as it can affect drug absorption. This medication contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should not take it. During the initial dosing period, there is a high risk of hypoglycemia; therefore, careful monitoring of blood sugar levels is essential. Patients at higher risk for hypoglycemia include the elderly, those with poor nutritional status or who skip meals, and those with irregular eating habits. Excessive exercise, dietary changes, and alcohol consumption can also increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Patients with impaired kidney or liver function, as well as those with other endocrine disorders, may also be sensitive to hypoglycemia. If other medications that interact with this drug are being taken, care should also be taken in managing blood sugar levels. Hypoglycemic symptoms may occur while taking this medication, including headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, drowsiness, decreased consciousness, etc. Severe hypoglycemia may lead to seizures or coma, requiring immediate treatment. Additionally, temporary visual disturbances may occur due to changes in blood sugar levels. Gastrointestinal symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, with rare reports of abnormal liver function or blood abnormalities. Allergic reactions such as itching, rash, and hives may occur, and in severe cases, they can progress to respiratory distress or shock. During treatment with this medication, regular meals, exercise, and weight management are crucial, as is continuous monitoring of blood sugar control. If hypoglycemia occurs, consuming sugar-containing foods can alleviate symptoms. It is important to inform other hospitals or pharmacies about the use of this medication and diabetes status. In stressful situations such as surgery or infection, blood sugar control may become difficult, necessitating a switch to insulin therapy. This medication is excreted via the kidneys, so dosage adjustments may be necessary for the elderly or patients with reduced kidney function. In cases of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, requiring immediate emergency treatment, which may include inducing vomiting, gastric lavage, or glucose injection. This medication is not recommended for children due to lack of established safety and efficacy. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use this medication as it can harm the fetus or newborn, and insulin therapy should be initiated if needed. This medication can interact with various other drugs, so if other medications are being taken, it is necessary to consult a doctor or pharmacist. Particular care should be taken with blood sugar changes when used in conjunction with beta-blockers, antibiotics, or steroids. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and should be kept in its original container sealed properly for safety.
