Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients undergoing dialysis treatment. Long-term use may lead to accumulation of aluminum in the brain or bones, causing problems. Also, it should not be administered to children under 15 years of age. Care should be taken when administering to patients with low phosphate levels, those with weak heart function, frequent diarrhea, elevated magnesium levels, and poor kidney function. Particularly, patients with compromised kidney function are at risk for abnormalities in the brain or bones due to aluminum accumulation with prolonged use, so it is important to regularly check blood levels of aluminum, phosphate, calcium, and alkaline phosphatase. Long-term or high-dose use of this medication can lead to elevated blood magnesium levels or decreased phosphate levels, so the condition should be closely monitored. If any unusual symptoms appear, appropriate measures such as reducing the dosage or temporarily discontinuing the medication should be taken. Additionally, gastrointestinal side effects such as loss of appetite, dry mouth, diarrhea, and constipation may occasionally occur, so these symptoms should be reported. This medication may interfere with the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, so it is advisable not to take them together. It can also alter the acidity (pH) of the intestinal environment or affect the absorption and excretion of other medications, so caution should be exercised with concurrently administered medications. Taking this medication in combination with milk or calcium supplements can lead to milk-alkali syndrome such as hypercalcemia or alkalosis, so symptoms should be carefully monitored, and if abnormalities occur, the dose should be discontinued.
