Improvement of type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control)
This medication is used as an adjunct to dietary and exercise therapy to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone and may be administered in combination with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin if there is no improvement in blood sugar despite the use of other oral hypoglycemics. In addition to medication, it is important for patients with type 2 diabetes to consistently implement nutritional counseling, weight loss, and exercise therapy. These efforts greatly help not only at the beginning of treatment but also in maintaining the effect of the medication over time. Thus, this medication effectively improves blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
This medication is administered orally once daily, regardless of meals. For monotherapy, it is initiated at 15 mg once daily, and if the effect is insufficient, the dose may be increased to a maximum of 30 mg once daily. For combination therapy, it should be administered at a dose of 15 mg once daily in conjunction with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin. The maximum recommended dose should not exceed 30 mg once daily.
Experience in using this medication in children under 18 years is lacking, so its use is not recommended.
This medication is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and is effective in lowering blood sugar only when insulin is present. It can impose a burden on the heart, so it should not be used in patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure. During treatment with this medication, fluid retention may occur, leading to symptoms such as swelling or congestive heart failure. Therefore, if sudden swelling or shortness of breath occurs, immediate consultation with a doctor is necessary. Patients with active bladder cancer or a history of bladder cancer should also avoid using this medication, and if symptoms such as urinary problems or blood in urine occur, they should promptly inform their healthcare provider. Patients with severely compromised liver or kidney function should avoid using this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication. Pre-menopausal women in particular should be cautious, as this medication may stimulate ovulation and increase the risk of pregnancy, necessitating proper contraceptive measures. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when this medication is used with other diabetes treatments, so dose adjustments of concomitant medications may be required. Patients should regularly monitor blood sugar and liver function tests while following their doctor's instructions, and it is important to notify their healthcare provider if there is sudden weight gain or worsening of swelling. During treatment with this medication, side effects such as headache, upper respiratory infection, muscle pain, swelling, weight gain, etc. may occur, so patients should be attentive to symptoms. Additionally, elderly patients or those with liver or kidney dysfunction should use this medication with extra caution. In case of overdose, there may not be specific symptoms, but patients should discuss with their healthcare provider immediately for appropriate measures. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established in children, so it is not recommended for use in this population. When storing the medication, keep it out of reach of children and maintain it in its original container to preserve quality.
