Precautions

This medication is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and only lowers blood glucose when insulin is also present. When taking this medication, careful attention must be paid to heart function. It may worsen or newly induce heart failure, particularly congestive heart failure; therefore, patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure should not take this medication. During treatment, observe carefully for sudden weight gain, shortness of breath, and swelling of the legs as signs of heart failure, and report any such symptoms to a doctor immediately. Additionally, this medication may cause fluid retention leading to edema; if edema worsens, consult a physician. This medication should not be administered to patients with bladder cancer or a history of bladder cancer, and immediate medical attention should be sought if hematuria or urination disorders occur. Patients with poor liver function should also exercise caution when taking this medication and should undergo regular liver function tests before and during treatment. There is a risk of hypoglycemia with this medication, so when taken with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents, patients should be vigilant for symptoms of hypoglycemia, and dose adjustments of other medications may be necessary as needed. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should not take this medication, and premenopausal women should use adequate contraception as this medication may stimulate ovulation. Elderly patients or those with deteriorated kidney function should be closely monitored while taking this medication. If symptoms such as sudden weight gain, edema, shortness of breath, hematuria, and urination disorders occur during treatment, consult medical personnel immediately. Finally, this medication should be taken once daily, and if a dose is missed, caution should be exercised to avoid taking double the dose the next day.
