Improvement of type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control)
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone or combined with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin if there is insufficient improvement in blood sugar levels after using other oral hypoglycemic agents. During treatment, nutritional counseling, weight loss, and exercise are also vital, as these contribute not only to initial treatment but also help maintain the effectiveness of medication therapy. This medication is used effectively to improve blood sugar control.
This medication is taken orally once daily irrespective of meals. For patients who do not have adequate blood sugar control with monotherapy, treatment may be started at 15 mg orally once daily. If sufficient effect is not achieved, the dose may be increased to 30 mg once daily. For combination therapy, this medication is administered in conjunction with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin, all starting at 15 mg orally once daily. The maximum recommended dose is 30 mg once daily.
There is no experience in patients under 18 years of age, therefore use is not recommended.
This medication is used for the treatment of diabetes and is effective only when insulin is present to lower blood sugar levels. This medication may worsen heart failure, therefore it should not be used in patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure. During treatment, fluid retention may occur, leading to symptoms such as edema, rapid weight gain, or difficulty breathing, which should be carefully monitored, and any such symptoms should be reported to a physician immediately. Patients with active bladder cancer or a history of bladder cancer should not take this medication. Caution is needed in patients with impaired liver function or severe kidney impairment, and regular liver and kidney function tests should be performed. As this medication poses a risk of hypoglycemia, those taking it with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents should be cautious of hypoglycemic symptoms, and dose adjustments may be necessary for other medications if needed. Side effects such as edema, weight gain, headache, upper respiratory infection may occur, so any of these symptoms should be reported to the attending physician. For premenopausal women, this medication may induce ovulation, increasing the likelihood of pregnancy, thus appropriate contraceptive methods should be used. It is recommended that women who are pregnant or may become pregnant do not take this medication, and that breastfeeding women consult a physician before taking it. This medication has not been studied in children and adolescents under 18 years of age, so its use is not recommended. Elderly patients should also use caution when taking this medication, especially those over 75 years old who should use it more cautiously.
