  • Type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medicine is used to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is administered as an adjunct to dietary therapy and exercise, and it can also be used as a monotherapy. If there is no improvement in blood sugar with other oral hypoglycemic agents, it can be administered in combination with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin. Additionally, nutritional counseling, weight management, and regular exercise are needed, as these efforts are very important not only for initial treatment but also for maintaining the effectiveness of drug therapy. This medicine effectively improves blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Precautions

This medicine helps control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. When taking this medication, it may put a burden on the heart; therefore, patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure should not use it. Additionally, this medication may cause fluid retention, so careful observation for symptoms such as edema or heart failure is necessary. If symptoms such as shortness of breath or leg swelling occur, consult a physician immediately. Patients with active bladder cancer or a history of bladder cancer should also not take this medication. Patients with poor liver function or severely impaired kidney function should also avoid using this medicine. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consult a doctor before using this medication and should use appropriate contraceptive methods. This medication works in conjunction with insulin rather than solely reducing blood sugar, so it is not suitable for patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. During the course of this medication, regular blood sugar and liver function tests should be performed, and patients should carefully monitor for unusual symptoms such as weight gain, edema, and shortness of breath. Additionally, when used in combination with other diabetes medications, hypoglycemic symptoms may occur, so patients should be fully aware of the symptoms of hypoglycemia and how to manage them. This medication should be used more cautiously in the elderly, pre-menopausal women, or patients with heart disease, and care for bone health is important as the risk of fractures may increase. In the case of overdose, there may not be any specific symptoms; however, if suspected, medical personnel should be notified immediately. Finally, it is not used in children as its safety and effectiveness have not been established.
