Improvement of essential hypertension and type 2 diabetic nephropathy
This medication is used for the treatment of essential hypertension and is particularly helpful in preventing and treating nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes associated with hypertension. It effectively controls high blood pressure, thereby reducing cardiovascular complications and protecting kidney function. Therefore, it is used in the management of essential hypertension and diabetes-related nephropathy.
Essential Hypertension Adults: Administer 150 mg of Irbesartan orally once daily, and if efficacy is insufficient, the dose may be increased to 300 mg. Generally, the blood pressure control effect over 24 hours is better when taking 150 mg compared to 75 mg once daily. In special cases (initiation of treatment, patients on dialysis, or elderly patients over 75 years), 75 mg may be considered.
This drug can cause severe harm to the fetus during pregnancy, so it must not be taken by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Additionally, it should not be used by patients with an allergic reaction to this drug, severe liver impairment, history of angioedema, or certain kidney diseases and diabetic nephropathy. Elderly patients, those with poor kidney function, or patients with hyperkalemia should use this drug cautiously, requiring regular blood tests and monitoring of physical conditions. This drug generally has many mild side effects, but serious side effects such as angioedema, hyperkalemia, renal failure, liver function impairment, hypoglycemia, and rhabdomyolysis can occur rarely, so any abnormal symptoms should prompt immediate consultation with healthcare providers. This drug can be combined with other antihypertensives to enhance blood pressure-lowering effects, but combinations with potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, and lithium preparations should be avoided. Care must be taken when using it with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) due to the risk of worsening kidney function. It is advisable for breastfeeding women to avoid this medication; if unavoidable, breastfeeding should be discontinued. Dizziness and fatigue may occur, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery, and diabetic patients should be particularly alert to symptoms of hypoglycemia. In the case of overdose, hypotension and tachycardia may occur, necessitating immediate evaluation at a healthcare facility for appropriate treatment. Lastly, it is preferable not to use this drug in children since its safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This drug may be sensitive to air and moisture, so it should be stored in a tightly closed container. It is recommended to keep it in a cool, dry place at or below 30 degrees Celsius.
