Improvement of type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control)
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone, but may be combined with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin when there is insufficient blood sugar improvement with other oral hypoglycemics. Additionally, it is very important for patients with type 2 diabetes to receive nutritional counseling and to engage in weight loss and exercise, as these lifestyle changes help in maintaining the effectiveness of drug treatments as well as initial therapies. Therefore, this medication is used together with various treatment methods for effective blood sugar control.
This medication is taken orally once a day regardless of meals. For monotherapy, it starts at 15 mg once daily, and may be increased to 30 mg once daily if necessary. In combination therapy, 15 mg is administered once daily and can be combined with sulfonylurea, metformin, or insulin. The maximum recommended dose should not exceed 30 mg once daily.
Experience is lacking for children under 18 years, so administration is not recommended.
This medication can affect heart function and should not be used in patients with heart failure. Symptoms of heart failure, such as sudden weight gain, shortness of breath, and swelling should be closely monitored after starting or increasing the dose. If such symptoms occur, the healthcare provider should be notified immediately, and the dose of this medication may need to be decreased or stopped. Additionally, this medication can cause fluid retention which may worsen heart failure, so patients with cardiovascular diseases should be especially cautious. Patients with active bladder cancer or a history of bladder cancer should not take this medication. Patients with liver disease or severe kidney disease should not use this medication, and if signs of liver dysfunction appear, a physician should be consulted immediately. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication, and pre-menopausal women should use appropriate contraception as the risk of pregnancy may increase while taking this medication. This medication can increase the risk of hypoglycemia; therefore, when taken with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents, signs of hypoglycemia should be carefully monitored. Swelling or weight gain may occur, so if these symptoms arise, they should be reported to the healthcare provider, and regular monitoring of weight and swelling status is needed. Elderly patients should be especially cautious when taking this medication, and particular attention is required for those over 75 years of age. Regular blood sugar and liver function tests should be conducted during treatment, and if any abnormal symptoms occur, the physician should be consulted immediately. Overdose may not present special symptoms, but appropriate treatment should be received based on symptoms. Finally, this medication should not be used in children and adolescents under 18 years old as safety and efficacy have not been established.
