View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can also be used as monotherapy, and if ineffective after the use of other hypoglycemic agents, can be used in combination with sulfonylureas, metformin or insulin. Patients with type 2 diabetes should not only use medication but also undergo nutritional counseling, weight loss, and exercise therapy. This integrated treatment is important for effectively improving blood sugar control.

Precautions

This medication is used to treat type 2 diabetes and helps enhance insulin action. However, it can put stress on the heart, so it should not be taken by patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure. During treatment, patients must be closely monitored for sudden weight gain, shortness of breath, or swelling in the legs that may indicate heart failure symptoms. If these symptoms occur, it may be necessary to immediately consult a doctor to adjust or discontinue the medication. This medication can also cause fluid retention and lead to edema, therefore patients with edema should be cautious when taking it. Active bladder cancer patients or those with a history of bladder cancer should not use this medication, and any symptoms of urinary dysfunction or hematuria should be reported to a doctor immediately. Patients with impaired liver function or severe kidney disease should also consult a physician before taking this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication, and premenopausal women should use appropriate contraception as this medication may stimulate ovulation and increase the risk of pregnancy. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when this medication is used in combination with other diabetes treatments, so dose adjustments of the co-administered medications may be necessary. Additionally, regular monitoring of blood sugar and liver function tests should be conducted during the period of medication, and if any abnormal symptoms occur, healthcare professionals should be notified immediately. Elderly patients or those with decreased kidney function should also be cautious when using this medication. There may be no specific symptoms for overdose, but appropriate treatment should be provided based on any symptoms exhibited. Finally, this medication has not established safety and efficacy in children; thus, it should not be used in the pediatric population.
