View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct to dietary and exercise therapy to enhance blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered as monotherapy, and if there is no improvement in blood sugar after the use of other oral hypoglycemic agents, it may be used in combination with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin. Additionally, nutritional counseling, weight loss, and exercise therapy are also important, as they help maintain the effectiveness of the drug therapy not only in initial treatment but also thereafter. Therefore, this medication effectively improves blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Precautions

This medication helps control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It may cause or worsen congestive heart failure in some patients, so symptoms of heart failure, such as weight changes, shortness of breath, and edema, should be closely monitored after starting treatment or increasing doses. This drug should not be used in patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure, and its administration is not recommended in these patients. This medication may cause fluid retention, leading to worsened heart failure when used in combination with other diabetes treatments, so symptoms of heart failure should always be monitored closely. If symptoms such as visible hematuria, urinary issues, or urgent urination arise during the use of this drug, they may indicate bladder cancer, and a doctor should be notified immediately. This medication should not be administered to patients with impaired liver function, severe renal impairment, active bladder cancer, pregnant women, or women of childbearing potential. Patients taking other oral hypoglycemic agents, premenopausal women, patients with edema, patients with heart conditions, and those with kidney dysfunction should use this medication carefully. This drug may cause side effects such as edema, weight gain, headache, upper respiratory infection, and in patients with a history of heart disease, there is an increased risk of developing congestive heart failure. Liver function tests and blood sugar control status should be monitored regularly while on this medication, and hypoglycemic symptoms should be observed. The use of this drug is restricted during pregnancy, and the effects on breastfeeding mothers are not known, so caution is required. It should also be used carefully in the elderly, and appropriate treatment should be given in case of overdose depending on symptoms. The safety and efficacy of this drug in children have not been established.
