This medication is effective in treating gastric and duodenal ulcers, and is used to relieve symptoms of erosive or ulcerative esophagitis caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease. It also helps in long-term maintenance therapy of gastroesophageal reflux disease, and increases the therapeutic effect when used in combination with antibiotics for patients with gastrointestinal ulcers infected with Helicobacter pylori. It is also used in the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome by inhibiting gastric acid secretion and improving symptoms. Overall, this medication is used in the treatment and symptom relief of various gastrointestinal ulcers and gastroesophageal-related diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

Gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer: Take 10 mg orally once daily; may take 20 mg once daily depending on symptoms. Administer for up to 8 weeks for gastric ulcers and 6 weeks for duodenal ulcers. Erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease: Take 10 mg or 20 mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks; if not resolved, may take 10 mg or 20 mg orally twice daily for an additional 8 weeks.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to certain ingredients or those who have experienced such reactions in the past. In addition, patients taking certain antibiotics or antivirals, and pregnant or nursing women, should not use this medication. Patients with impaired liver function or the elderly should use this medication cautiously, and caution is also needed in those with a history of hypersensitivity to the drug. This medication contains a dye called Yellow No. 4, so patients allergic to it should be careful. During administration, hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rash and itching may occur, and if such symptoms appear, the medication should be discontinued immediately. Blood tests may show fluctuations in red or white blood cell counts, so regular blood tests are recommended. Symptoms of liver dysfunction may also appear, so liver function tests should be conducted periodically. There have been reports of cardiac-related abnormal symptoms, gastrointestinal problems, neurological symptoms, respiratory and musculoskeletal issues, so caution is needed. Severe reactions may occur on the skin, so if there are skin rashes, hives, or hair loss, the patient should consult a doctor immediately. Abnormalities may occur in the eyes or ears, so any changes in vision or hearing should be reported. There have also been reports of urinary tract abnormalities, and caution should be exercised if difficulties in urination or hematuria appear. Long-term use of this medication may increase the risk of fractures related to osteoporosis, so bone health should be managed when used for extended periods. Hypomagnesemia may rarely occur, so magnesium levels should be checked regularly when taking for long durations or in combination with certain drugs. This medication inhibits gastric acid secretion, which may slightly increase the risk of bacterial infections in the stomach, so if diarrhea persists, the patient should notify a doctor immediately. Caution is needed as there is a risk of accidents due to drowsiness while driving or operating machinery. This medication may interact with other drugs, so especially when used in combination with antibiotics, antivirals, anticoagulants, etc., consultation with medical staff is required. It is safest to avoid using this medication during pregnancy or nursing. The elderly may experience adverse reactions due to decreased liver function, so if symptoms emerge, the medication should be stopped immediately and a doctor consulted. The safety in children has not been established, so use is not recommended. There is no specific antidote for overdose, and treatment and supportive therapy according to symptoms are necessary. This medication should be swallowed whole and not chewed or crushed. Keep out of reach of children, and it is advisable not to transfer to other containers. During the use of this medication, symptoms of autoimmune diseases such as cutaneous lupus or systemic lupus may appear, so if there are suspicious symptoms, the healthcare provider should be notified immediately. Additionally, this medication may affect the results of certain neuroendocrine tumor tests, so consult medical staff before the tests. Symptoms of kidney abnormalities such as acute interstitial nephritis may occur, so if symptoms like fatigue, nausea, or loss of appetite appear, notify a doctor immediately.
