Treatment of hypertension and kidney disease (in patients with type 2 diabetes)
This medication is used for the treatment of hypertension, especially helping in the treatment of kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes accompanied by hypertension. It stabilizes blood pressure and contributes to the protection of kidney function, thus effectively used for the treatment of hypertension and diabetes-related kidney complications.
This medication can be taken without regard to meals, but it is recommended to take it at the same time each day. For hypertension treatment, the initial and maintenance dose is recommended as 50 mg orally once daily as losartan potassium. The maximum blood pressure-lowering effect is observed 3 to 6 weeks after initiation of therapy. If the therapeutic effect is insufficient, the dosage may be split into 2 doses per day or increased to a maximum of 100 mg once daily.
For children and adolescents aged 6 years and older weighing between 20 kg and less than 50 kg, 25 mg is administered once daily, which can be adjusted to 50 mg once daily depending on the blood pressure response. For patients weighing over 50 kg:
This medication can cause serious harm or even death to the fetus when taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, so it should not be used by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. It should not be administered to patients with severely impaired liver function, certain genetic disorders, or a history of angioedema. Special caution is required when administering this medication to the elderly, patients with impaired kidney function, patients with hyperkalemia, and patients with heart disease. During the course of this medication, side effects such as dizziness, muscle cramps, cough, and indigestion may occur; if symptoms are severe, consult a physician. Interactions may occur if this medication is taken with other antihypertensive drugs, potassium-sparing diuretics, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, so it is crucial to inform healthcare providers of all current medications. Since this medication can pose risks to the fetus during pregnancy, it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed, and a physician should be consulted. Women who are breastfeeding should avoid using this medication if possible since it may be excreted in breast milk; if unavoidable, breastfeeding should be suspended. This medication should not be administered to children, especially those under the age of 6 or those with severely impaired kidney function. While taking this medication, blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels should be monitored regularly to check for abnormalities, especially in the elderly or those with kidney impairment. During treatment, sudden hypotension, loss of consciousness, and severe allergic reactions may occur, and if such symptoms are present, healthcare providers should be notified immediately. In case of overdose, hypotension and bradycardia may occur, so the dosage should be carefully adhered to and prompt treatment sought in case of abnormal symptoms. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and caution should be exercised as transferring it to other containers may affect product quality.
