  • Type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone, and if other oral hypoglycemic agents are ineffective, it may be used in combination with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin. Additionally, patients should receive nutritional counseling, weight loss, and regular exercise, as these lifestyle improvements are crucial not only for initial treatment but also for maintaining the efficacy of pharmacotherapy. This medication improves blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

If the effect is insufficient, it may be increased to 30 mg once daily. 2. Precautions

This medication is an oral hypoglycemic agent used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. This medication may cause or worsen congestive heart failure in some patients; thus, after starting treatment or increasing the dose, symptoms like weight changes, shortness of breath, and edema should be closely monitored. Patients with heart failure should not use this medication, and it is also not recommended for patients who exhibit symptoms of heart failure. When used with insulin, this medication can cause fluid retention, increasing the risk of heart failure; therefore, patients with a history of heart disease should exercise particular caution. Patients with bladder cancer or a history of it should not be administered this medication, and if hematuria or urinary disturbances occur during treatment, they must inform their doctor promptly. Patients with severely impaired liver function, severe kidney disease, diabetic ketoacidosis, type 1 diabetes, or women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should also avoid using this medication. While taking this medication, hypoglycemic symptoms may occur, particularly if used with other hypoglycemic agents such as insulin or sulfonylureas; therefore, medication dosage adjustments may be necessary to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia. Common side effects may include edema, weight gain, headache, and upper respiratory infections, while rare cases of liver function abnormalities or worsening heart failure have also been reported. During treatment, regular blood glucose and liver function tests should be conducted, and if any unusual symptoms arise, patients should consult their physician immediately. Premenopausal women should use adequate contraception as this medication may stimulate ovulation, increasing the risk of pregnancy. Elderly patients or those with decreased kidney function should also use this medication with caution, and dosage adjustments should be made at the physician's discretion. This medication is taken once daily; if a dose is missed, the next day should not include a double dose. Finally, safety and efficacy have not been established for use in children, thus it should not be administered to them.
